Scarlet, son of Scaja wears the distinctive long red coat of a peddler and brings home his wealth to his aging family in
Lysia. His pretty features of pale skin shrouded by ebony hair denote his Hilurin race, which are known for their
handsomeness and are valued targets for the slave and whore traders. It’s the Kasiri king’s attraction who has situated
himself on Snakepath to the town of Khurelen, Scarlet is most weary of. Skin the color of amber, lightest blue eyes
and features chiseled as if made of stone haunts Scarlet’s dreams day and night.
Liall the White Wolf of Omara is a Northman from Norl Udur; a land only told about in fables with no one believing it
really exists. With a well fortified Kasirian army blocking the way between Snakepath to Khurelen and charging a toll for
all who wish to pass, it is here that Liall meets a young peddler that will cause his compacted heart to swell with want and
forge a challenging conquest – or it could bring about his defeat.
Scarlet and the White Wolf Book 1: The Pedlar and the Bandit King takes me through the ingenious
imagination of Kirby Crow as she spins an intricately woven romance within an inspired country called Nemerl. Here lives
the peddler Scarlet, with itchy feet who cannot stay in one place for long, searching for his purpose or place in a world
that is hostile; even though his God Deva promises him safety and prosperity. To complete the romance is a misplaced
nobleman, Liall who is battered down by a life of lost loves, deceitful noble kin and the brutalities of a nomad warrior’s
existence. The characters are vivid and poignant as Scarlet, embraced by his Hilurin beliefs, remains unwavering in
relenting his chastity to Liall’s seductive pursuit. Liall’s sadness is measurable while he hides behind the veneer of
arrogance that makes the tired travelers nervous but shows compassion to impoverished trekkers who cannot afford the
required token that Liall collects for permitted passage between Snakepath to Khurelen.
Ms. Crow has formed a beautiful landscape for her imaginative country with a multitude of interesting people who form
culturally oriented tribes and towns giving this story affect and charisma. I gave this story a blue rating because,
remarkably, there is no sexual action to speak of; just sexual innuendoes that builds carnal tension. As the first story in a
new series Scarlet and the White Wolf Book 1: The Pedlar and the Bandit King lays the foundation for
future stories, so the lack of sex does not detract from this outstanding read. Without reservation, I enjoyed Scarlet
and the White Wolf Book 1: The Pedlar and the Bandit King and anxiously await the next installment; hoping
Scarlet will succumb to Liall’s seduction.
