Erotic-Escapades Author Of The Month Interview With...
Michelle M. Pillow
Miaka Chase: Hello Michelle and thank you for agreeing to be July's Author of the Month.
Michelle Pillow: Thank you for having me.
MC: I have been a fan of yours since the beginning I believe. The first book I read was part of the Dragon Prince series. It's hard to believe that was 2 years ago. Tell me what got you started in writing and how do you come up with the ideas for those yummy heroes?
Michelle Pillow: I've written ever since I can remember. As a girl in school, it was to scare the teachers *taking moment to have fond 8th grade memory*. Then later, it was bad poetry in a journal *taking moment to make sure vault is locked*. Writing novels just evolved naturally for me. In publishing, I jumped into long novels, only later trying my hand at short stories and a magazine article.
As for the heroes, anything can really be inspiring. But having a good hero at home really does help. By the way, he cooks. What more does a girl really need?
MC: LOL. I love a man who cooks. Kudos to Michelle's live in Prince Charming. I myself have a man who cooks and does the laundry.
Michelle Pillow: LOL I do laundry here. It makes me feel productive, like the dishwasher. See, I'm cleaning and yet I'm also sitting on the couch.
MC: Ahh modern technology. Gotta love it.
Michelle Pillow: So long as the husband thinks laundry is hard, I'm good to go.
MC: Hehehe. So let's do a brief-ish history of your books. The first series was the Dragon Prince. The Barbarian Prince (yummy goodness he was) was my among my first ebook reads and introduced me to the word of ebook erotica. Tell me where your ideas came from with this series.
Michelle Pillow: The four Dragon Lords The Barbarian, Perfect, Dark and Warrior Princes, started as a short 10,000 word love bite for New Concepts Publishing (NCP). Obviously, I had a problem shutting up about them, because it grew into the four Dragon Lords, which has spawned (so far) five Lords of the Var, two Zhang Dynasties, 4 Galaxy Playmates and about three other series (top secret of course) that are in proposal/contract/thinking stages.
As for the idea, I remember just having them pop into my head when trying to get to sleep. I'd get up several times just to write things down so my head would be quiet.
MC: Alright then, let's break them down in case the readers are unfamiliar with the series. Give a brief synopsis of what each series is about.
Michelle Pillow: *taking deep breath* You want book by book, or series by series?
MC: Whooo we'd be here for a good long time if we did it book by book. Let's try series by series. You know Dragon Lords begat The Var Lords begat Zhang Dynasties begat Galaxy Playmates... lol.
Michelle Pillow: Whew. The Dragon Lords are four books spanning the same period of time. Each one focuses on a different dragon shifting prince and his destined mate. Because of the same time frame, some events are shown in different points of view in the different books. I've gotten so many excited emails from people that love the format and want more. They often say, "I just read book 3. So that's how it happened!"
MC: The continuity of that series was especially appealing to me. I did love how things that happened off-screen so to speak where explained in detail in later books. Bravo Michelle! That's not at always easy to do and keep it fresh and interesting.
Michelle Pillow: Thank you. Lords of the Var came from the demand of more books. I really wanted to tell the story of the other side of the planet, the catshifters, since they'd been at war with the dragonshifters throughout the Dragon Lords. Many readers seemed hesitant because they'd grown to dislike the Var in the first books. But, thankfully, the books were as successful as the first and readers grew to love that side as well.
Galaxy Playmates is just a fun series of super sexy, short stories in the same universe as the Dragon Lords and Var. The Zhang Dynasty series, also part of New Concepts’ Harmony line, is the next installment of the DL and Var universe, taking off where Lords of the Var 5: The Pirate Prince left off. Though on another planet than the DL and Var, there will be returning characters. Another spin off series will include Var 5's shipmates in Space Lords--these men were cursed by the people in Zhang and have been around since Var 3, so there are a lot of reader favorites there. Any of the books can potentially interconnect with others. Like Var 2's heroine is the sister to Galaxy Playmate 1. It makes for fun reader connections.
MC: Wow. That's quite a catalog you have. And I agree, I like the associations between the characters in the series.
Michelle Pillow: It's fun to write and that way favorite characters get to come back. It's not necessary to read each series installment to enjoy the books, but I think it makes it fun.
MC: You also have a dark fantasy series Tribes of the Vampire...tell me about that series for those of us who like to get our "vamp" on, our angst- y vamp on that is.
Michelle Pillow: Tribes of the Vampire... what can I say? I just love this world. I have the whole history planned, though you readers don't get to see it yet, and such an elaborate weave of stories that it's like puzzle for me to put together. You have your baddies, your baddiers, your evil mofos, and not all of them are the heroes, lol. These are much darker in tone, more like a cross between horror and romance, but all the heroes are redeemable. They can take place in modern day, in history, both.
MC: What inspired you to write Tribes of the Vampire?
Michelle Pillow: The idea came to me when I was heavily researching paranormal history. I'm a big non-fiction book junkie and actually own more than fiction...which isn't saying much since I have a book buying addiction. I like to ponder, and I slowly built up this world where history and myth from around the world could have come from. The 8 tribes themselves are named from the old myths, but everything else just came from my head. There is a council, because someone needs to be in charge, but they're not really a hands on type, so often the younger vamps don't follow the few rules they do have. Some of the younger vamps don't even know think the leaders are real. Just like modern day clans/tribes/cultures, the vampire 8 tribes have different aspects to them that mark them of their tribe.
MC: Do you have an idea of how many books you are planning for this series? Or are the characters in charge of how many books there'll be?
Michelle Pillow: It really can be endless as far as number. Really, it's the readers that determine it. If they want more, I'll give them more. Though, ask me again after book Tribes #56. I might have something different to say.
MC: LMAO. I hear ya.
Michelle Pillow: Considering I didn't start out to write futuristics and I just turned in book 11 of the series...lol.
MC: What's the best thing about being able to do something you love and make a living at it?
Michelle Pillow: People pay me to make up stories. What's not to love? Well, besides the edits...lol J/K my editors are great.
MC: Editors get a bad rap I tell ya. Bad bad rap. Well, Michelle, we've learned about the books...so let's get to know you a bit more.
Michelle Pillow: *gulp* (Um, make sure you put that part of me kidding about the editors...lol)
MC: What are your favorite heroes/heroines and books of the ones you've written?
Michelle Pillow: That a really tough one. I love most of my couples--the ones that didn't give me headaches. Ask me the headaches, lol... Like Reid in Var 4 The Rogue Prince. I loved him until it came time for his book. Then we fought. He wanted to do one thing, I wanted him to do another. He won, but I'm still mad at him for it, lol.
As for favorites, there was Alexis in Opposites Attract (Virgin CHEEK). She was so completely and utterly unlovable at the beginning, but I made her that way on purpose. It was fun to teach her lessons and watch her grow. I also have favorite side characters, like Jiri from Tribes of the Vampire and King Lucien of the Damned from Realm Immortal.
MC: Ohh, so who are the ones that you wanted to tie up and paddle?
Michelle Pillow: Yes, another paddler was Malak from Naughty Cupid: Cupid's Favor (book 3, NCP, due out in August, print Jan 2007).
As for favorite books I've written, I love them all for different reason. I love to genre hop because it keeps my head and my writing fresh.
Though I'd have to say, lately I've loved writing Realm Immortal. The side characters were too fun. Like Halton and Gorman the annoying sprights.
MC: Is there any genre that you'd like to try but you haven't yet?
Michelle Pillow: The only romance based genres I haven't done are suspense and inspirational. I have a few books with suspense elements, but nothing that would make them labeled as that genre. Right now, I don't have plans to do either. But then I didn't plan to do chick lit until Virgin came along, so we'll see.
MC: What about erotic comedy? That's probably my favorite genre but it's not always done, and then not always done well...
Michelle Pillow: Technically, I do have a comedy out Pleasure Cruise coauthored with Mandy Roth at Ellora's Cave. And, btw, PC fans--we did turn in and contract Pleasure Cruise 2: Date with Destiny, so stop the threats LMAO. Just Kidding, Mandy and I both love the feedback.
I am usually funny so long as I don't try to be funny. When I'm told to write funny, I freeze, though I'm told my other genres are very amusing--in a good way.
MC: Right, I was gonna mention that Mandy and I talked about PC2 and it is rom com. But must have MORE!!!
Michelle Pillow: LOL the best I have to offer are the futuristics...since they are purposefully written lighter. Unless you count the Virgin titles. It's fun to mess with those characters too.
MC: Probably why I love them so...but I'm lobbying for more rom com now. I have to appeal to my favorite authors for more erotic comedy.
Michelle Pillow: *Rom Com, writing on to do list* ;)
MC: Yes, let's talk about the Virgin titles. Details please as these are only prints correct?
Michelle Pillow: Yes, the Virgin books are only in print. So far I have three. Fierce Competition (Aug 05) focused around a group of friends, one in particular, Jane whose social rival, Vanessa was out to make her life hell--trying to get her fired, trying to take her boyfriend. Opposites Attract (Jan 06) watches the fall of rich Alexis Grant as she loses everything and has no choice but to join her friend and a stranger, tattoo artist Ethan in working cross-country. And Bit by the Bug (Dec06-Jan07) takes a completely different tone, following Kat who is offered her dream in exchange for getting a bug scientist to crawl out of his shell. We're all very excited with Bit by the Bug. I do have more ideas pending with Virgin, but nothing to announce yet.
MC: Awesome. Congrats on your print titles. And where can they be purchased?
I'm published at New Concepts Publishing, Ellora's Cave, Virgin Publishing and Samhain Publishing. I also did an article for Lady Jaided Magazine.
MC: That's over 40 books you have published between these publishing houses, correct? What a career you have had so far! What's next for Michelle? Can you tell the readers about any coming soon titles? More M&M Presents hopefully?
Michelle Pillow: Thank you. Whichever contract I sign next will be #50, lol. What's next? Hmm. I don't know. I love writing and will always do that, regardless of where I go from here. Hopefully, it's up, but I'm also a freelance photographer and would love to get back into that. Basically, I'm always up for new experiences...so if any of you out there have a project for me, lol!!
MM Presents. You know, Mandy and I have talked about it, but I think the conversations usually get sidetracked into goofying off. I think we'll do more, but I don't know. If I say yes, Mandy might hurt me *laughing cause she's not here to defend herself or slap me*.
MC: LOL. There hasn't been a Valentine's Day themed book has there?
Michelle Pillow: No, not with MM Presents. But I wrote the Naughty Cupids (NCP) for those who don't like celebrating Valentine's. It's actually what inspired the series. A Cupid those women could love. ;). Anyone whose read it will get that joke.
MC: Yes down with Valentine's Day... lol!!
Michelle Pillow: Actually, Cupid's been controversial for me. I made him an ugly, smelly troll who hates love. Some people were not pleased. I think they were Valentines Police, but not sure, lol!!
MC: Your troll under the bridge cupid sounds interesting.
Michelle Pillow: LOL, he's worse than that. He hates love, hates beauty, and resents that his name is even associated with love. After all, all he did was hit a human instead of a goat with a love dart, making one couple fall in love. A troll really shouldn't be blamed for bad aim. Now the other trolls tease him.
MC: So he's all bah humbug with V-Day ? Interesting, sounds like the perfect read for me.
Michelle Pillow: You could say that. BTW, he was trying to make the goat fall in love with the human. You know trolls and their mischief.
MC: Naughty Cupid indeed.
Michelle Pillow: Good thing his plans usually backfire.
MC: Alright...now I get a little personal with Michelle.
Michelle Pillow: *gulp*
MC: Aside from your wonderful husband...Is there anyone who makes your heart beat a little faster when you see him in the movies, on TV etc.?
Michelle Pillow: You know, I like the funny guys. Give me some geek who'll throw water balloons of the top of the building and I'm good, lol. I really like the SNL crew.
MC: Wow...so no Colin Farrells, Brad Pitts or Vin Diesels for you?
Michelle Pillow: They're all cute. I like Johnny Depp, because of the movie roles he picks. I know, I'm weird. I find talent attractive, and humor. But I can't say I have any Hollywood crushes.
MC: Johnny Depp is definitely a hottie. No question.
Michelle Pillow: I loved JDepp as Capt Jack Sparrow in Pirates.
MC: OMG! Yes...he was so cool. I can't wait to see Pirates 2.
Michelle Pillow: Me neither.
MC: Speaking of movies....what are your top 5 ever?
Michelle Pillow: Oh that’s hard. Boondock Saints, The Pirate, the old stop motion films--Jason and the Argonauts, ect, LABRYNTH, Seven Brides of Seven Brothers, Legend, Willow, Dark Crystal, Princess Bride, Anything Monty Python or Vampires, Heartbreakers (Don't ask me for a reason, I laugh every time I see it), Beauty and the Beast, House of Flying Daggers, Mansfield Park, Ice Pirates, The 13th Warrior, Count of Monte Cristo, Moulin Rouge, Krull, Beetlejuice, Heathers (give me a break, I went through a goth Wynona Ryder phase as a kid), Practical Magic, Last of the Mohicans, Red Sonya (stop laughing)... um did I mention I collect DVDs and movies are a passion? Oh, Pirates of the Caribbean, can't forget that one, lol!!
MC: OMG...people don't know how much Red Sonja was a classic. And how about the claymation glory that was Clash of the Titans?
Michelle Pillow: I love those--Conans, Beastmaster (ok, the first one). Did I list Clash of the Titans? I LOVE THAT ONE. I'm such a movie geek.
MC: Me too, me too.
Michelle Pillow: Hey, the golden age of Hollywood is the best!!! Fred Astaire / Ginger Rodgers movies, The Spanish Main. Then Pixar is doing wonders- Shrek.
MC: Yes, animated movies are a big draw.
Michelle Pillow: I like some of the silent movies too. The Sheik. See, you could've made the whole interview about movies, lol.
MC: Very true. We could compare notes on movies. A lot of your favorite movies are mine from childhood etc. The Princess Bride is like my favorite movie EVER!
Michelle Pillow: There is no way I could list five. I'd have categories of sub categories.
MC: How about this one...if you could have a dinner party and invite 5 historical figures/actors/writers...who would they be? Living or Dead.
Michelle Pillow: Jane Austin, a medieval lord, an alien abduction survivor, we'll throw in Johnny Depp and Shakespeare and then just watch what they do.
MC: Interesting...very interesting. Ok, I think I've picked your brain enough.
Michelle Pillow: LOL.
MC: So any last words for your adoring fans?
Michelle Pillow: Message for fans? Keep adoring me? LOL, just kidding. Thank you so much for your support of my work.
MC: Well thank you for taking the time to interview with me. I had a blast.
Michelle Pillow: Thank you very much for having me. It's been great!!
MC: Don't forget....more Rom Com ;-) and more M&M collabos!!
Michelle Pillow: LOL I won't.
